A Parent Question Answered -

How Do You Keep Kids Safe on Outings?

“How do you help keep kids safe when you’re out on trips or walks?” – is one of the most common -and important – questions we get from families.

It’s a great question, and the short answer is: we talk about safety every single day.

Before any outing, whether it’s a walk to the park or a nature trail adventure, we gather the campers for a quick but intentional safety talk. We review expectations, practice staying together, and remind everyone about being aware of their surroundings.

But one of the most effective tools we use is something simple — and powerful: call and response.

Here’s an example we shared with a parent recently:

“Let’s say we’re walking to the park, and we see a dog on a long leash coming toward us. Even if it’s friendly, it’s a situation that could become unpredictable. So, the teacher in front might call out, ‘Kids Camp Rocks!’ and the group knows to stop, stay together, and wait for instructions. It’s our way of hitting a quick pause button to keep everyone alert and safe.”

These practiced cues create a sense of calm and structure, even in unexpected situations. Campers know the routine, and that familiarity gives them confidence — and keeps them secure.

We’re always happy to answer family questions like this one. After all, safety is our first priority — and it starts with communication, consistency, and care.
